1008 MARYAM

Maryam and the Rest of Memory, 150 x 150 cm, Acrylic on Canvas, 2014.

Maryam and the Rest of Memory

Maryam was a Palestinian peasant who would tend to her animals near Hawajri’s home by the Wadi Gaza. She would walk to the orange grove daily, a very green and fertile area, to pick various plants for feed. Hawajri recalls the conversations they would have and the smell of the orange trees and flowers during spring. He continues to have vivid memories of this time, especially given the present condition. Currently, the same area is now barren wasteland as a result of the occupation: the trees have been uprooted and destroyed, the flowers gone and the wells dried up. All that remains are the images in his memory.
